Slip, trip and fall accidents and their causes

There are a few different safety issues that workers could face, but none are quite so prominent as slip, trip and fall accidents. Many people are hurt every year due to dangerous working surfaces, and these incidents result in injuries and deaths.

Why do slip, trip and fall accidents happen?

Slipping is a result of losing traction. For instance, if you have heels on, then you have less traction under your foot and are more likely to fall. A few common reasons for slipping include hazards like gathered water and ice, wet or oily surfaces, loose mats or rugs and spills.

Tripping is different, because it's a result of losing your balance due to impacting an object with your foot. For instance, if you're walking into work and trip on a rug that has pushed up in the doorway, you'd be recognized as a victim of tripping. A few other reasons for tripping include sudden changes in the resistance of the floor, uneven walking surfaces, clutter on the floor that makes it hard to navigate a room and poor lighting.

Finally, falls happen either from a height or on the same level. Falls can be a result of slipping or tripping, because you lose your balance when those accidents happen.

In each of these circumstances, you shouldn't be left to deal with the consequences without fair compensation in Ontario. If you fall at work, workers' compensation should cover your injuries. If you fall at a local store or on a sidewalk, then another party, such as the property owner, should be held accountable for failing to repair damage to the property or warn others about the risks present.
