Tips for staying safe while riding a motorcycle

There are a few safety tips you can use to stay safe on a motorcycle. For instance, choose to stay as visible as possible. That might mean wearing a bright helmet or bright clothing, equipping your motorcycle with auxiliary lighting, or even riding closer to the center line, so you can be seen more easily.

Always anticipate that drivers will make errors. Scan your environment and slow down as you approach drivers if they aren't making eye contact or another motion to show they see you. One of the most common accidents for motorcyclists takes place when a driver doesn't see them and pulls out in front of them. If you see a driver approaching on your right, slow down, make eye contact and make yourself heard.

Make sure that you drive in a predictable way, too. Don't change lanes abruptly or surprise other road users if you can help it. If you're coming into an intersection and think that others don't notice you slowing or approaching, you can use a horn or press the brakes to activate your lights.

In around 40 percent of all fatal collisions involving motorcyclists, the accidents took place at intersections. Be particularly cautious as you approach and pass through. If a vehicle appears not to be stopping, taking evasive action may be your only choice to avoid a crash, but be wary of vehicles approaching from other angles.

If you are hit by someone driving dangerously, remember that you do have the right to speak to an attorney and file a claim for compensation.
