Fatal pedestrian accident kills man in Markham

The Major Collision Bureau has taken over the investigation of a recent accident, according to York Regional Police. The fatal pedestrian accident in Markham, Ontario has claimed the life of an unknown man. So far, police have not filed charges against the driver involved in the crash.

Police have confirmed the accident took place around 4 p.m. the afternoon of Nov. 12. It appears that the man, who has not been identified by police, was crossing the street when he was struck by a vehicle. A spokesman for York Regional Police has said the man may have been struck by up to three other vehicles as well, but only the first driver stayed at the scene.

It appears the man was struck by a vehicle that threw him into oncoming traffic, where the other collisions happened. The man was pronounced dead of his injuries. Police have asked for the support of the community in determining exactly what happened and have asked any witnesses to the crash to come forward with any information they can provide.

Depending on the outcome of the police investigation into this fatal pedestrian accident, it is possible one or more drivers could face criminal charges for their role in the man's death. In addition to any charges that may be filed by police, the family of the deceased man is entitled under Ontario law to file a wrongful death suit or suits against any driver/s believed to have contributed materially to his death. These suits are handled in civil court and may make use of police evidence to help prove their claims.
