Girl dies in Ontario car accident

A tragic accident in Huron County has left a 17-year-old girl dead and a 19-year-old man fighting for his life in a hospital. Ontario Provincial Police responded to the single-car accident on the afternoon of Dec. 6 near Vanastra. For the moment, they have yet to file charges against the driver, but their investigation is still underway.

According to the accident report, it appears the 19-year-old driver was operating his vehicle on London Road when he approached a line of traffic waiting to make left-hand turns. In an effort to bypass this traffic, he turned his vehicle onto the gravel shoulder to the right of the vehicles. He then lost control of the car as it re-entered the pavement, causing it to enter the oncoming lane.

The vehicle was struck head-on by an armoured truck. The female passenger was killed on impact and pronounced dead at the scene by medical authorities when they arrived. The driver was seriously injured and was rushed to a hospital in London with injuries described as life-threatening. It is unknown if he is expected to survive at this time.

If the driver does survive, it appears he may face citation or even criminal charges for reckless driving if the accident report is accurate. Separate from any criminal charges, the family of the deceased passenger is entitled under Ontario law to file a wrongful death suit against him and any registered owners of the vehicle he was operating in the car accident. Such suits are handled in civil court and often make use of police evidence to support the claims.
