Ontario man faces charges for hit-and-run accident

A Burlington man is under fire after an accident that injured a 13-year-old boy on Nov. 4. Ontario police are calling the crash a hit-and-run accident as the 23-year-old driver reportedly left the scene. The man is now facing charges and has a court date scheduled for Dec. 7.

The accident report says the man was travelling northbound on Appleby Line in Burlington when he attempted to make a left-hand turn. In doing so, he entered a crosswalk where the 13-year-old boy was crossing with his bicycle. It is not clear how fast the man's car was going at the point of collision, but the boy was seriously injured and was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition.

The man reportedly fled the scene, and his vehicle was discovered nearby by police. He eventually returned and was arrested for fleeing the scene of an accident causing bodily harm. There has been no word yet if further charges will be filed against him as the investigation progresses.

Ontario police will continue to investigate this hit-and-run accident leading up to the driver's court date in an effort to ensure all applicable evidence is considered by the criminal court. Even if the charges are dropped or no conviction is secured, however, the family of the boy has the option to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver in a civil court setting. The evidence gathered by police leading up to the criminal hearing may be instrumental in supporting a civil case of this type.
