Teen dead following Ontario car accident

Police believe inclement weather may have played a role in the death of a 17-year-old girl in Markham. Ontario authorities responded to the single-car accident that claimed one girl's life and sent two other women to the hospital. For the moment, it is unclear whether police will choose to file charges against the driver involved in the crash.

The accident report is missing key details, but it has been confirmed that the SUV carrying the three women was traveling near Markham Road in thick fog around 3 a.m. the morning of Nov. 18 when the accident occurred. For reasons that are not yet known, the driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old woman, appears to have lost control of the SUV. The vehicle left the road and flipped over, ejecting the 17-year-old passenger. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and a 21-year-old female passenger were both seriously injured. Emergency crews found one of the two women outside the vehicle and the other trapped inside when they arrived. They extricated the trapped woman and rushed both to a trauma centre in Toronto. Their current statuses are unknown.

Ontario police are asking for the support of the community in determining what caused this car accident. They have not ruled out reckless driving, despite the inclement weather. If the driver is found to have been operating her vehicle in an unsafe manner for the driving conditions, she could face criminal charges. The family of the deceased girl and the injured passenger are also entitled to file wrongful death and personal injury suits against the driver, respectively, in a civil court.
